GLOBAL MAJORITY AND THE UNIVERSITY FOR PEACE TO LAUNCH SEMINAR ON CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PEACE-BUILDING IN COSTA RICA:
Posted on Tuesday, May 06 @ 17:20:21 EST by jgprimenews

CIUDAD COLON, COSTA RICA - America Session 2008." As Global Majority Executive Director, Cameron Hunter, describes, "The threat of global climate change and degradation of natural resources has spawned a new set of environmental conflicts. Increasingly, this competition for dwindling natural resources necessitates that decision-makers be equipped with the tools to resolve these types of conflicts. This is what we aim to do in our upcoming Latin America training seminar."

Global Majority's seminar will introduce participants to the fundamentals and practice of negotiation and mediation and specifically address environmental issues affecting conflict. Specific topics presented during the seminar include Costa Rica's unique conservation and development history; environmental cooperation and conservation strategies; background to various conflicts in Latin America; cultural and gender aspects of conflict resolution; and civil society's role in mitigating and resolving conflict.

The training course will be held in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica May 26 – June 6, 2008. For two weeks, students and participants will attend lectures by an impressive slate of accomplished professors, speakers, and trainers from around the world that specialize in nonviolent conflict resolution and environmental peacemaking. Included in this list of trainers is retired Chilean Judge Juan Guzman, who is widely known for his instrumental role in the prosecution of Augusto Pinochet. Additionally, the University for Peace will grant four units of graduate or upper level undergraduate credit and/or a graduate certificate for students' participation in this program. Global Majority is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Monterey, California, with an International Advisory Board – a leadership body comprised of 30 members from 25 countries – and is dedicated to promoting nonviolent conflict resolution through education, training and advocacy.
