GARBAGE TRUCK RUNS ON GARBAGE? …USED VEGETABLE OIL
Posted on Thursday, March 06 @ 16:19:17 EST by jgprimenews

MAMARONECK, NEW YORK - Mar. 5, 2008 Mamaroneck, NY, March 5, 2008 Instead of using diesel fuel, the Town of Mamaroneck's 2002 Mack 300 garbage truck now runs on used vegetable oil with a system designed and manufactured by V.O. Tech, LLC.

Recognizing the importance of local government's role in dealing with climate change on a local level, the Town's innovative strategy is seen as a courageous first step and is expected to be a model for other municipalities to follow. Town Supervisor Valerie Moore O'Keefe said "The Town of Mamaroneck is not only a leader in the effort to reduce carbon emissions, but is attaching the problem in innovative and creative ways – ways which are getting residents, local businesses, and local organizations enthusiastically involved." The V.O. Tech system includes a 43 gallon vegetable oil tank along with a GEO (pat. pending) combination heater, filter housing and manifold which heats the vegetable oil so it can be burned in the truck's EM 300 engine. The estimated annual savings for the Town is 40 gallons of diesel fuel per week, or roughly $5,400 per year. Drivers have experienced no operational differences using the "Veggie Truck" and the switch from diesel fuel has not impacted wither engine power or packer operations. The truck starts up with diesel fuel and once reaching operational temperature, the driver simply flicks a switch to make the change to vegetable oil.

V.O. Tech, LLC, is a manufacturer of high-performance diesel-hybrid conversion systems that allow mechanical and electronic diesel-powered engines to operate on either pure (straight) vegetable oil, or traditional diesel fuel, all at the choice of the driver. The company was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Mahopac, NY.
